Overview
Research_Edge_
The Product
Research_Edge_ is an easy–to–install, simple–to–use PC software that provides users with a powerful, personalized “PC–assistant” able to cost–effectively mine intelligence from various (structured and unstructured) data stores – whether the data resides somewhere on the PC drive itself, on the Corporate Intranet or on the Internet. Research_Edge_ has the following main features:
-
Uses advanced “search–by–concept” processing to extract information from a wide variety of document types – Word, Adobe, HTML, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and so on;
-
Learns its user’s preferences, and uses this learning to interpret document “relevance”;
-
Continually refines search and retrieval accuracy in direct relation to its cumulative understanding of its user’s interests;
-
Leverages underutilized IT resources by increasing processor utilization, on the one hand, and leveraging network effects to distribute expert knowledge across the organization, on the other;
-
Requires no specialist installation, is open–source, platform– and language–independent, and does not require any new hardware to run.
Research_Edge_ offers the most benefit to people who, on a daily basis for their work, are intensive users of unstructured information – PDF documents, Edgar filings, emails, email attachments, presentations, Word documents, WordPerfect documents, webpages, search engines, etc. Professional researchers – including financial analysts, management consultants, journalists, undergraduate and graduate students, lawyers – are among the knowledge workers that can effectively use Research_Edge_ to gain an edge over competitors.
Some possible, and valuable, applications for Research_Edge_ are considered below:
Research_Edge _on local drives. In its simplest form, Research_Edge_ is able to scan and retrieve relevant information from structured and unstructured data stores residing on local drives. For example, a remote user may be interested to discover all the information on a certain subject/client amassed in various files on the PC drive – in Word, email, Excel, or PowerPoint. Research_Edge_ allows the user to perform a broad search through all these various files, then retrieve and present information in a user–friendly form.
ResearchEdge on the Intranet. Even more powerful is Research_Edge_’s ability to help users identify and retrieve specific expertise from a corporate Intranet “umbrella” for numerous, distributed data stores that contain valuable, but unshared, knowledge. Distributed knowledge–base environments with “limited” centralized data repositories as back–up are increasingly common today, as more knowledge workers gather individual expertise that others in the organization may need but are not aware of. Since mandated policies on publishing data to centralized repositories are often difficult to implement and always difficult to enforce, finding ways to mine these underutilized expert fields is critical – saving time, eliminating wasteful duplication and increasing overall productivity. Research_Edge_ achieves this goal by scanning – within end–user permission, under well defined security rules – the Intranet, identifying expert knowledge and negotiating the retrieval of relevant information.
Research_Edge_ on the Internet. If a Research_Edge_ user wants to find, say, recent news/information on “Enron bankruptcy” on the Internet, Research_Edge_ would find not only those documents containing the initial keywords (“Enron” and “bankruptcy”) but also other documents of relevance in the same “ecosystem of meaning” (concept) – such as “Congress hearings”, “Raptor partnerships”, “creditors”, and even “Fastow” – different keywords but similar “concept” relevance.
Research_Edge_’s powerful “concept–search” capability, described above as an application for the Internet, is in effect applicable to any other search destination as well – local drives, Intranet, or subscription data feeds. Moreover, Research_Edge_ not only provides relevant answers to complex queries, but can also help the user find the right question by generating new ideas in the ecosystem of search – eventually helping the user find the needle in a “broad area of interest” haystack.
